15 Things to Put in a Letter

Updated: Aug 12, 2023

Recent life circumstances have made it so that I will be writing plenty of letters in the future. Yes, I do mean so-called "snail mail." As I was looking for inspiration for these many letters I will be writing, I came to the realization that the list I was hoping for of things to put in a letter was lacking. So, as any writer would do, I decided I should write that list.

Note: This list is operating under the assumption that you know the person you're writing to.

  1. A drawing from yourself or a child

  2. Relevant newspaper clippings

  3. Comics you find funny and want to share

  4. Pictures of what you've been up to, especially if you're not connected with this person on social media

  5. A paragraph or two about how your life has been going

  6. Your thoughts on the broader topic of life and its inevitabilities

  7. A funny thing that happened "the other day"

  8. A description explaining why your favorite color is, in fact, your favorite color

  9. An explanation of a project you've been working on

  10. An update about one of your hobbies, why you enjoy it, why you decided to pick it up

  11. A list of jokes you find funny

  12. A collection of puns you find enjoyable

  13. Questions about the recipient's life

  14. Pictures of cute animals

  15. A list of books/movies/tv shows you've been enjoying, specifically if the recipient will also enjoy them.

I hope you've enjoyed this short list! If you have any ideas for future lists you want to see from me, please let me know!
